I am doing video for Monday Night Countdown for ESPN. We do a cut-ins and segments before and after the game. The first two games were at New England Patriots and then Miami Dolphins. This week am in Dallas.
I decided after several days of overcast and gray skies, that I could not let a day with sunshine go by. Even if the winds were suppose to be up. So, with a sandwich and chips in hand I headed out for a lunch on the water.
The water wasn’t too bad so why not go out a ways for lunch. Well, why not go on out past the second oil platform where I often find dolphins. NOTHING! Float around and eat lunch then decided even though the ocean was getting rough, that I liked the way I saw waves crashing on Santa Cruz Island.

I was starting to get 8 - 10 foot seas and in the Zodiac wasn’t concerned about safety — just a rough ride home. I was 20 miles away. Time to head home. But, wait. NO WAY. Whales are out of season and should all be gone! I found myself in the middle of four active humpback whales. Check out the photo album here and Richard’s Photographs for more images.
We just felt an earthquake here. If you are going to have one, guess this one was good as it was a “kewl” and then over. Just a sharp jolt but not enought to rattle anything. Although, I grew up on the New Madrid fault and felt these types of quakes all the time. There was another small quake down toward Orange County last week. Maybe this is good an releasing energy. Seems this area has a large quake about every 10 years and I have been out here about that long.

Here is a photo from the beach of a Delta II rocket launch from Vandenburg AFB. Vandenburg is about 50 miles away, but we can often see the launch and lucky enough to have see a couple at night. See http://www.spaceflightnow.com/delta/d341/status.html
My friend, Glen Kinney and follow ham radio operator come over today With the great weather we (I) decided to go OUT in the boat rather than WORK on the boat. We went up to Ventura and about 8 miles out close to platform Grace before returning toward the harbor. No whales and as it often goes, the dolphins were just outside the harbor. Still a nice trip.

I have reworked my photo’s site making it simpler to view. The site is designed and programmed by myself using PHP. Behind the scenes is where it shines, but unfortunately no one sees that. I have taken the time to write routines that makes posting new images and all the assorted requirements as simple as just uploading the image.
Take a look at Richard’s Photographs …..
Ok, now I know I moved out here from Arkansas not yet ten years ago and there are a lot of things that I miss. Many things I don’t. But, you always think of Arkansas being more country. So, why is it I had a raccoon on my deck, over the salt water, in a harbor next to a beach in California??
What started off as a trip to Arkansas to visit family, ending up driving instead of flying. I drove from Oxnard to Dallas to visit Collin and Becca, then up to Arkansas. My youngest son is going to Henderson State University in Arkadelphia. So after an afternoon visit and dinner, I drove up to Conway where I stayed in that area for about a week.
Cody flew into Little Rock on a Friday and after a weekend with grandkids, we headed back going through Mounument Valley, Bryce and Zion National Park. An overnight stay in Las Vegas and then home. Eighteen days and 5064 diving miles!
Will be posting more specific information in the near future.
One of my biggest passions other than photography and boats and cars (hmmm…) is amateur radio. I have been licensed since 1970 and active on the air for most of those years. While there are some limitations where I currently live, I still enjoy the thrill of throwing out a call and see who comes back. Could be local. Could be around the world.
My amateur radio web site is all changed. I had lived with the last one for more years than I would like to admit. Now it has moved into the 21st century with a blog. You can visit it at WD5B.
